Why Tromsø Became Norway’s Tourist Capital: The Arctic Phenomenon
December 12, 2025Navigating a new city above the Arctic Circle can be daunting, especially when temperatures drop, and you just want to get to your hotel. Fortunately, the public transport system in Tromsø is reliable, extensive, and relatively easy to use once you know the basics.
Whether you are chasing the Northern Lights, heading to the Cable Car (Fjellheisen), or just need to get from the airport to the city center without spending a fortune, this guide covers everything you need to know about getting around Tromsø.
How the System Works: Troms Fylkestrafikk
The public transport system in Tromsø (and the surrounding county) is operated by Troms Fylkestrafikk. The system includes both city buses and district buses, as well as express boats and ferries.
For most tourists staying in Tromsø, the City Buses are the most important mode of transport. They are distinctively white and red (or sometimes plain white with the “Svipper” logo).
The “Svipper” App: Your Best Friend

The most important rule of public transport in Tromsø: Don’t buy tickets on the bus with cash. It is significantly more expensive, and drivers often do not carry
To save money and time, you should download the official app called Svipper.
Download Svipper: Available on the App Store and Google Play.
- What it does: You can buy single tickets, 24-hour passes, or 7-day passes directly on your phone.
- Real-time planning: The app also functions as a travel planner, showing you real-time bus arrivals and the best route to your destination.
Note: You might see references to an app called “Troms Billett” in older guidebooks. This app has been replaced by Svipper.
Ticket Prices and Zones (Updated 2025)

Bus zones in Tromsø
Tromsø is divided into zones, but the good news is that the entire city center, the airport, the Arctic Cathedral, and the Cable Car are all located within Zone 1 (Tromsø).
Below are the official prices for Adults inside Zone 1:
- Single Ticket: 48 NOK (valid for 90 minutes)
- 24-Hour / Daily Pass: 133 NOK
- 7-Day Ticket: 311 NOK
- 30-Day Ticket: 630 NOK
Tip: If you plan to take the bus more than 3 times in one day, the Daily Pass (133 NOK) is cheaper than buying single tickets.
Are You Under 30? The “Young Adult” Discount
One of the best secrets about traveling in Tromsø is the generous age limit for youth discounts. While many countries cut off youth tickets at 18 or 25, Tromsø considers you a “Young Adult” until you turn 30.
If you are between 18 and 29 years old, you should select the “Young adult” category in the app.
- Huge Savings: The discount is massive on periodic tickets. For example, a 30-Day Ticket for a Young Adult costs only 348 NOK.
- Compare this to the standard 7-Day Adult ticket (311 NOK). For almost the same price, a Young Adult gets an entire month of travel!
Other Age Categories:
- Child: 6–17 years
- Child (0–5): Free
- Senior: 67 years or older
How to Get from Tromsø Airport (TOS) to the City Center
This is the most common question travelers ask. You have two main options by bus:
Option 1: The Flybussen (Airport Express)
- Pros: Very comfortable, plenty of luggage space, stops at major hotels.
- Cons: More expensive (approx. 125-200 NOK one way).
- Best for: Travelers with heavy luggage or those who want a direct door-to-door service.
Option 2: The City Bus (The Budget Option)
- Pros: Much cheaper (Standard Zone 1 price, 48 NOK).
- Cons: Can be crowded, less luggage space, stops at standard bus stops rather than hotel doors.
- Routes: Look for Bus 40 or Bus 42.
- Where to catch it: The bus stop is located just behind the parking garage at the airport (follow the signs for public transport).
- Best for: Budget travelers and backpackers.
Important Practical Tips
- Signal the Driver: In Norway, you must signal the bus driver to stop. If you are standing at a bus stop and see your bus coming, wave your hand. If you don’t wave, the driver might drive past you.
- Validating Tickets: If you bought your ticket in the Svipper app, you do not need to scan it when entering the bus unless the driver explicitly asks to see it. Just make sure the timer is running on your screen.
- Night Buses: On weekends (Friday and Saturday nights), there are often night buses. Be aware that these lines might have different routes.
Summary
Getting around Tromsø doesn’t have to be complicated. Download the Svipper app before you arrive, stick to the city buses for the cheapest airport transfer, and—if you are under 30—don’t forget to claim your Young Adult discount!
